With a new version of the game on the way, if there ever was a time to talk about this, then that time is now.
So… Ego Stevens, very much based on Velveteen Dream and obviously that turned into a messy situation. I’ve been on the fence about it bothering me enough to say something. Personally, Dream Weavers were one of my favorite tag teams originally. As a Shinsuke fan and Yugen being his analogue, I still use them a lot. There is no doubt that since the (very bizarre) situation with the accusations levied at Velveteen Dream that I am less enthusiastic about using them.
What matters the most here is precedent. When Joey Ryan faced his own accusations, his elements were removed from Mr. Europa. I honestly felt it wasn’t necessary since the influence was minimal, but I understand the devs choosing to do so. So, if accusations are enough to make changes to certain characters, it feels like Ego Stevens should also face the same edits. Let’s be clear, neither Dream nor Joey Ryan were ever criminally charged, so it definitely falls in a gray area. However, it would be logically inconsistent not to make changes to Ego Stevens based on what was done with Mr. Europa.
The fix does seem easy. If nothing else, Ego Stevens could at least be altered to become an analogue of Rick Boogs. However, now there is a new problem. Are the devs going to be accused of white washing what has been a black character? Mind you, the skin tone for Ego Stevens already differs from his Glitter Guard alter ego, so I don’t think it is unreasonable to bring it into line for both gimmicks.
This topic might be moot. For all I know, the devs could already be implementing changes on their own accord. I don’t think it hurts to pose the question to the community for discussion, though. It is also my understanding that Connor McGregor actually has been charged with crimes, but I really don’t follow MMA so I’m not 100% sure. If there are even allegations, though, should the McBastard character be subject to the same treatment?
It does feel this turns into a slippery slope, but again, I’m posing these questions on the grounds of the established precedent and not on my personal feelings on the matter. Feel free to bring your own feelings into the discussion, but if you have a problem with “cancel culture” or anything along those lines, please don’t direct your attacks at me. I know I have a history of taking a very hard line on Chris Benoit’s legacy that has turned into arguments with other community members, but that is an entirely different situation with a lot less moral ambiguity. In general, let’s aim to keep this civil regardless.
