Rumor has it that there will be more releases today, mainly NXT. I hope they're wrong about it. The sad fact of the matter is that WWE/NXT has a bloated roster, as does AEW. Both companies have too many people under contract not being used. Obviously both companies CAN afford to keep these people, but it doesn't make practical sense to do so. Think about how many people there are on main roster television every week. Then think about how many people are on the main roster but NOT on television every week. Think about how many people are on the NXT roster, then consider that there's close to 100 people in the Performance Center classes that aren't "TV ready". It's times like this that having the old territories would be perfect, since everyone who gets released would have a place to go to get steady work. Unfortunately the territories are dead, the indies are what they are, and the big two in the US already have pretty much all the talent they need. Its true. All three WWE brands and AEW do have a bloated roster, but it’s because so many people are so exceptional that they have value even when used sparingly. Truthfully, wrestling should be as good as it ever has been right now. WWE is what it has been for the last 15 years or so— incredible production quality in spite of camera cuts, tremendous talent, questionable booking led by an out of touch old man. AEW hit the ground running and has had consistently good material with a few exceptions. Impact is getting better and has several genuine stars (Moose, Rich Swann and Chris Bey come to mind). ROH could put out a great product with the talent they have. NWA is about to go live again. Lucha Underground is rumored to be making a comeback. Chikara and MLW may still be around. And that’s just in the US— NJPW, Stardom, and what was a robust European scene before Covid and #SpeakingOut are out there as well. I’m almost certain these guys would all find jobs immediately in our new “territory” system if Covid hadn’t made it impossible for half of these organizations to continue operations profitably. Hopefully as we vaccinate, adapt, and get back to whatever the new normal looks like, some of these smaller promotions will grow to where they can be competitive again, and be a great proving ground for talent like they once were.

Drake, another referee, Alexander Wolfe, Kavita Devi, Jessamyn Duke & Vanessa Borne are the names I've heard so far.
Shame about most of them, but good on WWE for finally getting rid of Drake. I can only hope Velveteen Dream is next.

Didn't realise Duke had been working in the office. Guess they needed to create some space.

I can only hope Velveteen Dream is next. I have a feeling that Dream’s contract is close to ending and they are just going to run out the clock with him. It’s a very bizarre situation. I imagine they don’t want to fire hm because there are some holes in some of the accusations against him and they don’t want a potential wrongful termination lawsuit down the road.

Regarding Velveteen Dream, I think my brother said it best: "The kid could have been a main eventer, but instead he decided to be a scumbag"

Dream being released is one of the few releases that made me go "Yeah, that makes sense".
It's a shame, dude was destined to become one of the biggest stars of WWE, now I don't think any major company wants to touch him with a 10-foot pole. For me, he's now one of the biggest what-ifs?

Okay, what in the wide world of sports entertainment is going on there?
Granted, I've only returned to fandom in the last year, but...just...what?

I know, let's re-sign his wife, start work on a whole new character arc. Then he can debut by getting one over Big E.
And then we'll release him.
Absolute shambles of an organisation.

I’ve seen it elsewhere, so I can’t take credit, but the people who are saying this looks like things a company does to make themselves attractive to potential buyers are absolutely correct. Vince is in his mid-70’s. He doesn’t trust anyone else to control the company after him, so he makes one last giant payday for himself and his family by selling out to NBC/Peacock, say, after next year’s Mania.
I’d expect a lot more big names to be released in the hopes of resigning them to smaller deals. I’d be surprised (but not shocked) if Strowman doesn’t get resigned before the end of his non-compete for half of what he was making.
