Alexi Monstro had an incredible independent career. People loved to hate him in the ring. When everyone saw the picture of him with HHH and heard he had signed with NXT, the internet went nuts.
He was a star in NXT, feuding with all the top guys and winning the title. After a good run, he gets called up to Raw.
"Well pal." Said Vince (who never watched any of his early work or his run in NXT). "I don't think people will get behind a big Russian badass. We tried it a few years ago with Rusev and it didn't work. But everyone seems to like this Thanos guy in the Marvel movies. So why don't we completely scrap your established gimmick you've had for years, because it won't work in WWE. And let's make you a super villain. Oh, and you have to drop your first name too."
