I watched Impact Wrestling last night because I'm very curious where this AEW/Impact thing is going. Still, the biggest question I had after the episode had nothing to do with the partnership, but with a certain Mr. Josh Matthews.
What is this guy doing on commentary?
It sounds like he is doing a bad Michael Cole impression. If you're going to an impression of another commentator at least make it someone like JR or Mauro Renallo. Who needs another Michael Cole?
They have Don Callis, Scott D'Amore and Matt Striker on the books. All of which are much better talkers. Stick one of them in the booth. Hell, have Tommy Dreamer call the action. I'm sure he's done that more than once in ECW.
Matthews was perfectly decent and came across a lot more natural as a backstage interviewer, so why not use him in that role?

Ah man I miss Renallo loads on NXT, he was perfect for the job. Still, am pleased for him that he saw the signs it was getting too much for him and got out. I hope he's back at some point.
Impact's commentary problem is that they don't really have a lead commentator at all. Matthews would work perfectly fine as a colour guy. All the names you mentioned above are all colour guys too.

Matt Striker was great as a lead commentator on Lucha Underground. I think having Striker & Callis as the commentary team could really improve the show.

Josh Matthews is an absolute abomination. Gordon Solie was turning over in his grave last night. The main event between Swann and Willie Mack vs Moose and Bey would have been very good with an excited crowd and a good announce team. I thought it was average at best because of the wet blanket on commentary.

the worst commentator is Excrement as he is god awful Excalibur is a fine commentator for indie-level shows. His work back in the day in PWG with Disco Machine made for some hilarious back and forth along with calling the action pretty accurately. However, I do agree that as a national tv wrestling broadcaster he's too caught up in the minutia of things and not thinking big picture. Dear Excalibur, Nobody knows that you were a wrestler or who you wrestled for Nobody knows who Super Dragon is Nobody cares that the move has a different name in Spanish if there's a commonly used English term Get off TV for a month or two and return with a new name and no mask if you want to be taken seriously As for Josh Mathews, I haven't seen Impact in years but I remember him being awful then and I can't imagine he's any better now. I get that Striker knows a lot about wrestling but I personally didn't care for him as the lead in Lucha Underground.

Yes, “TOPE CON HILO!” does become annoying, but my gosh, he and Taz on Dark have me cracking up most of the time. I think that when it comes to announcing, we can all agree on several things: 1. Don’t try to become bigger than what you’re calling. This was my annoyance with Lawler, Ventura, and some of the old school heel color guys (and Corey Graves to an extent). 2. Don’t bury the talent because you don’t get it. I’m looking at you, AEW JR. 3. Get excited about what’s happening. Schiavone, Mauro Ranallo, and Excalibur all make me feel like what I’m watching is a big deal. If I could put together a cross-promotional ideal three man booth from any era, it’s Mauro on play by play and Samoa Joe and Heenan on color. I’d also have Schiavone doing in-ring interviews and Renee Paquette (Young) doing backstage interviews.

Sadly, Excalibur isn't the worst announcer on Dynamite As for this week - I watched Impact for the first time, well ever, tbh. AEW mentions were all over the show. Constantly talked about. Even a "paid ad" with Tony & Tony. However, 24 hours later, no mention of Impact at all apart from towards the end when they spoke about Callis being with Omega. And then Callis & Omega repeat, almost word for word, the same interview they did on Impact. In 1 show, they've already established that Impact is minor league and ruined the small amount of credibility they had. Meanwhile on NXT...Karrion Kross returns. 4 top stars vying for a title shot at Balor. And apparently Gargano is a Mandalorian. Great show as usual. It's very rarely NXT does a bad show.
