As soccer/footy comes up semi-regularly in this space, I figured I'd start a space to smack talk before this winter's big event.

I genuinely love the draw day, I'm not sure why as it has approximately the same amount of drama as the first few balls of bingo night at the local senior center (not the part where bingos are actually drawn...that's far more dramatic).

I'll be rooting for my home country (US), areas for family/significant time lived (Ghana, Scotland*), areas with significant connection through family/students (Serbia, NZ*, South Korea, Ecuador, Mexico) and for good stories (England, Christian Eriksen's Denmark)...so I guess just about everyone but Saudi Arabia?

How are others feeling?

I go through the same process every European and World Cup. I don't care at all when the tournament starts, then the Netherlands does surprisingly well in the poule phase. I start getting more and more enthousiastic about it and then I get bitterly disappointed as they fumble it in the quarter- or semi-finals against an opponent they should've been able to beat.

Other than the US, I basically just support teams with Man City players. So if the US get knocked out, I’m rooting for Belgium.

Oh yeah also North Macedonia beat Italy in the qualifiers to eliminate them, then got beaten by Portugal. They beat last years euro winner and basically left. Legends.

I’m excited Canada qualified. I can hear the laughs now! It has been a long time…..1986. 😳. We have a good young team and I hope we can get out of the group stage.

Not just that, it'll be Black Friday in the states. No gridiron, most workplaces closed, and a marquee match. It's gonna be a big game for US Soccer.
