Bigger Bad and Sportsmanship

So I know these cards are supposed to give bonuses, but I don't see what those bonuses are.

It's definitely not money. And I don't see any star bonuses either. When I do good vs good with the sportsmanship card, the most stars I've gotten is 2.

What am I missing with these cards?

You normally get a penalty for Good v Good and Bad v Bad matches.

Using these cards negates that penalty.

I see. I was unaware of said penalty.

Very handy cards - I managed to get 4* with Flawless vs Jet Set (80s) using the "bigger bad" card. Before the card bonus they always got a 2* rating.

But I use them all the time, especially in No:1 contender matches when I want the title match to be good vs bad.

My question is if it really is a penalty because all it does is add a point or two to the match which is a bonus
