Greetings, grapple fans!
It's that time of year again! Guts & Gory is in the rear view, we've got a new JWA World Heavyweight Champion, and we're about to embark on the true test of champions, the J-1 Pinnacle Tournament! Twelve wrestlers in two groups of 6 will battle in round robin competition until one stands atop each group, with the group winners battling to determine who will take home the J-1 Pinnacle Trophy, the glory, and the shot at the World Heavyweight Title at our Destiny PPV in January 2024! There's a lot of intrigue in this year's tournament, and it's anyone's to win at this point! Let's take a look at this week's card:
Block A:
Arizona Chance (0) vs. Omega Satyros (0)
The newly crowned JWA World Heavyweight Champion, Arizona Chance, is also the defending J-1 Pinnacle champion. In most situations you would have to consider Chance the favorite, except that his draw in the first round is the surprising newcomer Omega Satyros, who also happens to be the last man to defeat Chance here in JWA. Satyros has been quite the sensation so far in his rookie year, but will he be able to defeat "The Franchise" a second time in singles competition?
Bad Luck Bradley (0) vs. "Lord" Taylor Thorin (0)
Bradley recently returned to JWA after leaving to help restore the lives of the former members of The Compound, and he has already managed to earn himself a shot at the World Tag Team Championship. Last year Bradley had a very... interesting... series of matches in the J-1, though not necessarily successful. Will Bradley fare better this year? He'll have to defeat a very motivated "Lord" Taylor Thorin. His Lordship would love nothing more than to take home the coveted J-1 Trophy and claim a title opportunity at Destiny. Thorin has a big grudge match coming up next week in the J-1 - could Bradley catch his Lordship distracted this week? It may be his only hope.
Duke Mongoose (0) vs. Red Pirate Rogers (0)
Entering this year's tournament as one half of the World Tag Team Champions certainly gives Duke Mongoose some momentum, which he'll desperately need if he wants to have a better run than last year. His opponent is no slouch, that being Red Pirate Rogers. The Crimson Captain is a perennial favorite to win the tournament in each year he's participated. Will this be his year? Or, much like his opponent for next week, will Rogers be caught distracted and hand Big Daddy Duke an opening night victory?
Block B:
Pierre The Enormous (0) vs. Chad Shredsbury (0)
Big Waves Explodes! These former two-time World Tag Team Champions will go head to head for the first time ever here in the opening round of the J-1! Shredsbury is coming off of a victory at Guts & Gory in the Penguin Kai Karate Fight, and you know he would love nothing more than to beat his old tag team partner. Pierre will be as motivated as ever, not only to get revenge on Shredsbury for what he's done, but also to win his first J-1 tournament in his fourth attempt. Will we see Troglo or Huggy Bear get involved?
Chief Buffalo (0) vs. Penguino (0)
The Animal Kingdom explodes! Okay, maybe it's a bit late for that, but these two former tag team partners find themselves in very different places than a year ago. Penguino is coming off a shocking loss at Guts & Gory and Buffalo has seemingly rekindled his working relationship with Miss Jessie. Both of these competitors will be looking to get their careers back on track, and what better way than by winning their first round match in the J-1?
Seph Kobane (0) vs. Tommy End (0)
Tommy End is returning to JWA this week after a successful excursion into the MMA world, but End is no stranger to the J-1. Much like Pierre, this will be End's fourth J-1 tournament without having captured the trophy, and he'll be extra motivated tonight to make a statement. His opponent, Seph Kobane, was the last minute replacement for former World Heavyweight Champion "Relentless" Conor Caine. We haven't seen much out of Seph since he's returned alongside Bad Luck Bradley from The Compound. Will he turn out to be the sleeper success story of the 2023 J-1 Pinnacle? Not if The Dutch Destroyer has anything to say about it!
Let's get the 2023 edition of the J-1 Pinnacle Tournament started! Get out there and work your gimmick!
(The polls will be open for at least 24 hours. It doesn't matter who you vote for, just that you participate!)
