So after watching the Bulldog documentary (which was excellent but felt like they cut loads out) I decided to watch the Battle Royal at the Royal Albert Hall special event which (spoiler) Bulldog won the “Royal Samovar Trophy”. I decided to do some internetting about the trophy and came across this on Reddit which was kind of funny and pretty neat:
www.reddit.com/r/SquaredCircle/comments/mzpt5e/the_lineage_and_current_holder_of_the_royal/
We've been many title linages here on r/squaredcircle... "Dominik's Papi", "Best in the world", The current "brawl for all" champion but I don't think anything has as much class and prestige as The Royal Samovar Trophy.
"I only started watching WWE in the Ruthless Aggression era, what is this trophy?" I hear you say?
Well, In 1991 The World Wrestling Federation held an event at London's Royal Albert Hall and the main event was a 20 man Battle Royal for the coveted Royal Samovar Trophy... What happened to the trophy after that night? nobody knows but I'm going to use the internet to find out who should have the trophy now...
To do this, I'm not going to include house shows and matches can only happen in WWE/WWF (TV Events/PPV) if a wrestler left the company with the trophy, they will have it. Matches can also only be singles or multi-man matches but cannot be tag matches
The British Bulldog won the trophy after eliminating Typhoon from the Natrual Disasters. - October 3rd 1991
The British Bulldog would end up losing his trophy to Ric Flair at the Royal Rumble - - January 1992
Hulk Hogan then beat Ric Flair at a Superstars taping on Feb 17th 1992 It was a count out finish but there is no champions advantage with this title, brother!
Yokozuna would take the trophy off of the Hulkster (and the world title) at King of the Ring 1993 (The crowd went mild!!!)
Lex Lugar then won the trophy (probably with the help of that metal plate in his arm) at Summerslam 1993
Yokozuna would win back the trophy at Wrestlemania 10 to become our first 2 time winner but this would be short lived as Bret would beat Yokozuna at the same event
At King of the Ring 1994 Diesel would take the trophy thus proving that the real prize at King of the Ring is the Royal Samovar Trophy
Razor Ramon then won the Trophy at Summerslam 1994 exactly 1 week after my 11th birthday
J-E-Double F J-A-Double R - E - Double T would win the trophy at the 95 royal rumble
Big Daddy Cool would begin a 2nd reign on an episode of Raw (feb 20th) - only the 2nd time the title had changed hands on free TV
Diesel would not defend the title at King of the ring as he was in a tag match (understandable given the history) but did lose the title to Waylon Mercy (who?) on Superstars Sept 25th 1995
This would be Spivey's last televised match and he would retire as the holder of the Royal Samovar Trophy. so yeah... there we have it everyone... Waylon Mercy...
