I've only been playing this for a month but been playing MMW gm for ages,so the first couple of times i visited the shop I brought some new wrestlers but when I went to add them in a show they weren't there It was only after a bit of research I found out about the active years! Having known this before I wouldn't have bought them.I think that only the active years cards should be in the shop so idiots like me don't waste money on something you can't use for 10+years in (game time) it's not like you can sell them.

To be fair, collecting some wrestlers outside of your current active years is necessary for having a workable roster during a first playthrough.
That being said, I don't think the in-game help section has anything about active years. It would probably be useful to be one of the first now you know segments.

Active Years are explained in the (unskippable) tutorial. So every new 8MWR player is informed immediately.
Active Years are also the only bit on vital info that is colored "highlighter yellow" on the back of every Wrestler card.
Further, every single time you attempt to buy a Wrestler card from the Shop that is not currently Active, a red WARNING! message displays, explaining the situation and asks if you're sure. You then have to manually click through again to accept. Also note that you can use the Legendary Match and Continuum Match to use Inactive Wrestlers in ANY game year. In other words, ANY card is usable at ANY time in ANY year with these special Matches. Retired wrestlers can also be used in the Battle Royale match, and go on to become champion - continuing to defend the belt until they lose it. Perhaps most importantly, a New Game+ allows for fresh Fed history at any time starting in the years 80/85/90/95 where this card is always a part of your collection, for any infinite number of playthroughs.

It's been a long time since I've had to regularly buy cards in the game, but I genuinely can't believe I forgot about all this.
Please join us on the next episode of branana forgets obvious stuff, coming soon to a forum near you.

As you go on through the game you can get the "Continuum" and "Legends" match, skit and mic spot cards too. So if you want to use a card outside it's set time period, you can.
But it's easily done - did it myself when I started 😂.
