With me. It was part of the Monday Night wars series, and was good because it was self contained. We're going to meet him soon on his tour (my wife knows that he's my favourite and Mankind in particular).
We're watching it and it's showing the famous Hell in a Cell and talking about it and out of nowhere my wife pipes up "I don't like this, turn it off" I was confused.
I've never watched wrestling with anyone that wasn't a mark before. It never occurred to me how graphic it actually got. How...violent I guess it really got. It never occurred to me how screwy the whole thing was I guess.
Just an interesting observation from an outsider.

In my opinion wrestling is considerably less graphic than most TV violence and far less graphic than football.

Mick did some of the most bat-crap crazy stuff ever seen this side of Sabu. But to me, the HIAC match was not even in the top five of things Foley did that would make me want to change the channel. Much like you can’t take your eyes off a car wreck, I remain glued to the screen when there’s a replay of that match.
No, the barbed wire bits he did, the exploding ring matches, the unprotected chair shots Rock gave him, doing the diving elbow drop to the concrete over and over... those were far harder for me to watch. The fact that your wife couldn’t watch after a bit that happens twice a year nowadays does tell us how desensitized we’ve become to the horror these guys put their bodies through for our entertainment.
You’d best not show your wife Orton v Hardy from HIAC this year. That screwdriver bit was nausea-inducing.

Orton is redefining PG. Jeff Hardy has the extended ear lobe hoop things, and Orton took a screwdriver, put it in the ear lobe hole, and twisted it. A couple of weeks ago he took another guys finger, took the turnbuckle padding off, stuck the finger in between the cabling between the buckle and the ring post, and nearly twisted his finger off. I guess since there’s no blood, no cursing, and no actual injury, it counts as “PG”, but it causes a visceral reaction rarely seen anymore in wrestling.

I think that happens with pretty much anything. Wrestling in particular is weird bc many people who aren't fans are quick to say it's fake yet are the first ones to point the finger at it when a kid gets hurt in real life or like your wife get a little upset at the violence even though it's a TV show.
Nobody really does that with other TV shows that are way more violent. You can watch shows where people are getting shot or worse and nobody bats an eye. Like I said wrestling is in that gray zone bc they think it's fake but it's actually happening so their brain is a little confused as to what to think.
That's what makes wrestling an art form. Most of the stuff they do is dangerous and does hurt but they know how to do it without getting seriously hurt or worse. Sometimes accidents still happen and people still get hurt. Hell I destroyed my biceps tendon trying to open a window at a weird angle. Getting dropped on head or thrown over the ropes 300+ days a year it's a miracle they're not all in wheelchairs.
But someone from outside that fandom wouldnt realize that and Mick Foley may be the most extreme example especially to expose them to.

I mean, I think the difference is simulated vs real. A lot of wrestling is real, a lot of it not, and that grey area is a scary place. No one is walking away from a simulated shoot out in a movie with a concussion, and someone probably is in wrestling. I'll be the first to point out Kayfabe and the 'fakeness' of it all, but when it gets real, it gets real.
