i don't have all the wrestlers, so I don't know which cards are the best in each category but I look for total draw (listed on the back of every card). The wrestler with the best draw in every category is the best card, because that means that he/she has some high stats (skill/mic/pop) and can pull matches or skits with better quality and help selling tickets.
That's why Chet Skye is one of the best openers early in the game, he has a good draw!

IMO, if you’re wanting to boost star ratings of your early shows, the best way is through purchasing a couple of key foil cards in the opener and midcard range. Chet Skye and Soul Daddy foils can give you an opening match with a total draw averaging around 49, skill averaging 16, and the good v bad bonus once they’re maxed out. That gives you a potential 4* match that helps you sell tickets right off the bat for an investment of around $15000.
O’Hooligan’s good 1985-89 foil maxes out at a 65 total draw for $40k as an upper Midcard. Mercenary 80-89 is in the midcard with a skill maxed out at 16, so his foil is probably an 18 or 19 skill for the midcard only spots for $15k.

For each category, it is best to determine the career years and the total draw (as well as the stat distribution). So, I'll give my honest opinions on wrestlers to buy in each category.
Jobber- Honestly, most of the jobbers are pretty bad and not worth picking up. Only one you could argue is The Schmuck, with good Mic and Pop that are above average.
Opener: Soul Daddy/Ezekiel, Skeleskreem. In the 80s, Soul Daddy is one of the best openers in the game, and he doesn't get any worse in the 90s. In the 90s, Skeleskreem has one of the highest Pop ratings in the game with good Skill and Mic to boot.
Mid-Card: Robolectro, He-Beast the Barbarian/Beastheart. All of these wrestlers have an excellent total draw, and while they are only good for a decade, the 80s is a crucial time to building up money for free to play, and these wrestlers do just that. Beastheart is just a slightly worse version of He-Beast for the 90s.
Upper Mid-Card: Reptile Ranger, Exotic Rick (regular), Mr. Tycoon. Honestly, I used all of these wrestlers in the 80s, and they are all great. For the 90s, I'd say Dragonfly (regular), Chicano, and Average Guy ('89).
Main Event: Slashmaster (regular), Ace Arcadium/Ace of Spades, Flawless One, King V Jet Set Strutter (Bad)/(Tweener) Troglo (90s), Lazer (Neon 80s). All of these wrestlers have something in common. Their stats are great with good distribution, and they all last for 10 years or more.
Legendary- Ace of Spades, The Hunk, Dude Brohan ('80s), Average Guy ('80s), HFK, Undermaster (Tweener). All of these wrestlers last 9 to 10 years, and their stat distribution are excellent.
Ladies- Queen of Mean, Gothica, The Scmuck (Mid-Card), Mynx, Penny Dreadful. These are wrestlers that are cheap and have a good Total Draw with good stat distributions to an extent. Honestly, most of the ladies in the game do not have a good Skill rating, and those that do either lack in every other department (like Trixie and Female Fatale) or are expensive to pick up (like Lyndi Harker and Elara Nexus). If you can get a Main Event lady like Almighty Dolla and Gorgon Tokoro, then they can help your division a lot in the long run, and are definitely worth picking up.
These are just a few examples of good wrestlers to pick up, and these are some that I'd recommend. However, there are definitely certain wrestlers to avoid at all costs (no pun intended) that I can go over quickly.
Jupiter, Sumo San, Overload, Valkyrie, Troglo (80s), Madam Tiki, Enormous Pierre, Pierre the Enormous, and Samson.
Okay, that took some effort to put together. If you want more information as to how to shop smart, then I suggest looking up Part 4 of my Beginner's Guide, which is based all on shopping.

great post, mystmotone101.
Another thing I think when I'm getting new cards is if they can form a feud/tag team with cards that i already have...

great post, mystmotone101. Another thing I think when I'm getting new cards is if they can form a feud/tag team with cards that i already have... Agreed, which is why I like to add Zap to my list of excellent openers. Draw might not be the highest, but he has quite high skill, has a tag team with Boombox and 2 feuds: 1v1 with Soul Daddyand a tag match vs Metalheads. 3 star Opener match almost guaranteed by that singles matchup.

That's it. Same happened to me with Overload. He doesn't have the biggest draw but is in 3 feuds and a tag team.

Once he becomes World Champ he is virtually impossible to beat and has a fairly decent draw.

I think the single best value for any character in the game is Arizona Chance. Doesnt cost anything, is damn near a guaranteed 4 star skit with a dramatic promo, and is in a readily available tag team and feud. To further add to it, hes a cruiser to boot, so he has the potential to be a grand slam champion.

Once he becomes World Champ he is virtually impossible to beat and has a fairly decent draw. The thing about Samson that makes him worse than some of the main eventers and even most of the great Upper Mid-Card wrestlers is his stat distribution. His push rating is the highest in the game, no question, but the rest of his stats are weak, and sadly, Push is the least important stat in the game when it comes to getting good star ratings. That's why Samson is not good when it comes to value.

I wouldn't mind this, but it would be best if all of them were either maxed or at their minimum stats. Consistency is the best tool for value.

I was going to say, there’s no way Spazz is the best midcarder in the game. I don’t even know where he’s pulling that number from; maxed out, he is only a 37.
