1. Free Will by Rush. My favorite song by my favorite band. A very honest look at religion without making a mockery of any side of the equation, with the most incredible one minute of combined drum, bass, and guitar work I’ve ever heard. 2. Paradise City, GnR— A great song with an absolutely bonkers final two minutes. Slash and Duff both go absolutely nuts on guitar and bass, and Axel for once doesn’t make himself the center of attention. 3. Alive, Pearl Jam— Another one with tremendous lyrics and a wicked guitar solo at the end. Probably Vedder’s best vocal performance, and the rawness of his voice matches the subject matter perfectly. 4. Comfortably Numb, Pink Floyd— Not one, but two perfect guitar solos. The song is absolutely perfect in almost every way. 5. With or Without You, U2– I played this song for the church worship team that I lead to teach them how to build to a climax in a song. It is constructed incredibly well, and also Bono and Edge are there, so it’s good by default. 6. One, Metallica— A song about PTSD before most people had it on their radar. Probably the fastest solo I’ve ever heard that still sounds like music. Hetfield’s vocals are spot on, as they almost always are. 7. Cult of Personality, In Living Colour— Before it was Punk’s theme, it was iconic. “I tell you one and one makes three” is the perfect descriptor of almost every politician. 8. Uptown Funk, Bruno Mars et al— The song is just fun. 9. Comatose, Skillet— The mixture of strings and industrial metal are phenomenal. Jon Cooper’s voice is on full display as well. This song has been my ringtone for 8 years or so. 10. Black Dog, Led Zeppelin— Just try to count a beat. I dare you. To keep it together with that degree of arrhythmia is a tremendous feat.
