A lot of ppl say old WWE games, from the 2000s to early 2010s, are the best wrestling games. And today's games get criticized for being the same game every year. I think the new games have FAR better actual gameplay, but just doesn't have enough modes. the old games didn't really have great gameplay, it was actually pretty repetitive, but had more crazy stuff & modes, which made it more fun than today's games. What do y'all think?

Looking specifically at WWE games....they all pretty much SUCKED up until they started coming out for the N64 or the PS1. Seriously....the NES, SNES, Genesis ones were all pretty much the same game with a slight evolution in grpahics.....repetitive as hell and not much difference in terms of characters apart from finishers.
The Arcade games were kinda fun....Wrestlefest and WWF Superstars both featured a more colorful setup, better music and things like promos and entrances....all the console games until were pretty storyline-less.
WM2000 for the N64 did real good...but No Mercy hit it out of the park for me....only game that was as fun for me for later consoles was Smackdown:Here Comes The Pain.
The RAw vs Smackdown games ended up being nice and the tributes to a legend each year were good...but the actual differences from year to year weren't enough to justify paying out more money....not even online play tipped it over IMHO.
I hate to say it but I think in terms of Graphics, Sounds, Animatuion, there's only so much more they can really add at this point....the mechanics are about as realistic as they can get...and I sure as hell don't see them throwing in a lot effort into compelling storylines that will make you want to replay the game through various possible endings in the lines of something like Fallout.
Now with all that said I'd really like to see a storyline driven WWF game set back in the 60s where you play a new wrestler working your way through matches in gyms and parking lots until you hit the big time...maybe wrestle through 2 decades before becoming a manager, and then the game mode changes and your job is to get your guy over and help him win (but not get DQd)...and eventually you may take up a management/booking role and work the game from that POV...and if you do well enough you maybe get inducted into the Hall of Fame lol!

IMP No Mercy on N64 was the pinnacle for me...but purely based on the system you used to control your character.
If they'd stuck with than going forward I think they'd have had more success.

WWE 2K19 is a huge step forward. 2K are now starting to focus on their WWE games along with their NBA games. But, I do enjoy playing older games, as the gameplay is just better. I absolutely HATE the submission system in these modern games.
